As a telecommuter using high-overhead VPN tunneling and encryption, life was slow and boring with the legacy, yet lower-priced, 1M/256K, package I had been using. Just upgraded before noon to 2M/1M, and this evening's speed test was right on as advertised. Cox cable internet has been extremely stable, without re-booting the modem for months on end. Vonage VOIP has also run flawlessly over the Cox service. This is in stark contrast to previous Adelphia/Comcast service, which required (sometimes daily) frequent modem re-boots, frequent service calls, and a modem change. On the TV side, good value, but they only seem motivated to keep my price right under the ATT Uverse pricing. Just enough to keep me in-house.

Running Premier, I see speedboost downloads up to 3MB/s for the first maybe 30 seconds, then down to 1.8-2MB/s. That's MBytes, not Mbits. Uploads are 400-480K for 15-30 seconds, then down to 250-300K.
I'm content with it, but could always be faster. Currently it's the best deal, and highest speed in the New Orleans area far as I know.
Order and install was good overall. The tech who was sent to the house was very competent and polite.
Arris Touchstone telephony cable modem with backup battery was supplied with service. It works. No bells and whistles. Just works.
The phone techs sometimes still have a hard time understanding when I call with a connection problem. If I mention that I have a telephony modem, they transfer me to the phone support department that only handles problems specifically with the phone side of the service, not the connection itself. That gets frustrating.

The service goes does at least twice a day, just dropping and the modem needs to be reset. The modem log indicates i am losing my wan IP address regularly, but the technicians state nothing looks wrong when i talk to them. At this point, i am very happy with the courtesy and friendliness of the agents i speak to, but i would just rather the service work.

Cox ISP were good internet provider in Wichita, ks and I hope that DOCSIS 3 is coming soon in my the area.
*UPDATE Oct. 19, 2009 21:39*
I placed the implemented to put a filter on TCP reset for inbound traffic direction only and I don't find any single encountered problem of iptables firewall and my experience were great, smoothly and speedy and my P2P applications wouldn't be interrupted by rogue hacker or either internet service provider forged TCP reset packets where it is filtered at inbound traffic direction only and speeds of internet were great at times, DNS caching forwarded server were implemented too that were boosted my productivity of an internet and my pleasure of an internet of gaming. I don't care if Cox internet service provider wants to keep sending any forged TCP reset packets to a consumers also includes me but that will not affected my productivity of an internet due that forged TCP reset were filtered at inbound of my iptables firewall system however I understands that Cox internet service provider have right to send out any forged TCP reset packets on their OWN network equipments as Cox's networks so that isn't mine.
Anyone who running Linux OS so that can take of advantage of iptables firewall to put filter on TCP reset packets as disruptive packets of downstream of receives from ISP who maintains ISP's network equipment by sending the TCP reset to cut any virtual circuit connection down of TCP network inside of ISP networks and Linux users receives TCP reset is filtered at the point of iptables firewall be dropped and that puts Linux users be on full of a free fast lane all times, for windows users are utterly completely SOL that don't have tools to filter TCP reset packets out of their way.
Bittorrent download speeds were great speeds in the short time that is great to share the files over an internet with combination of iptables is blocked the TCP RST and use bittorrent encryption, I use UDP for both tracking and DHT, my kbittorrent were running over 2.5 MB/sec to 3.0 MB/sec of download rates that is really great!

| Re: Bad information, reviewless-review. This is a bad review I have read. How is the service? What kind of computer is the person using? How very good, stable, and reliable the service is in the area? How good is the ping times? What kind of cable modem is he using? What does he thinks of tech support? New users and neighbors are going to wonder how good and fast Cox is. Also, how good tech support is. They aren't going to care about the RWIN the person is using and the speeds which they are using with that RWIN. Especially new PC and Internet users don't know what a RWIN is. All he talks about is he uses some ridiculous RWIN and his speeds are 20Mb. I mean no one really cares. They want information about the service in his area. And RWIN, MTU, and MSS is something that goes right over their heads.
Thank you.

I got the premium package through Cox that includes Digital cable, phone, and the 10 meg premium cable internet. Between the hours of noon and midnight, the internet is practically unusable because so many people are on the same backbone. Speed tests commonly show a connection around .5 megs or lower! I get horrible lag spikes that often clear 1000ms making gaming completely impossible, and quite often I get packet loss and lose my connection constantly. Ive had a tech over several times and they are totally confused as to what the problem is or how to fix it. I would be surprised if the last tech that came over could even spell his own name. The problem is, that too many people are running through the same server and they refuse to add more in the area to break up the traffic. They were supposed to send a supervisor and a senior tech over today, but alas, no one showed up and no one called.... again.
I just got done making the call to Embarq and ordered their DSL package, and hopefully it will be a better experience. Ive never tried DSL.. so it may not be any better, but it cant be any worse!
UPDATE: I moved in with my girlfriend and its a year after that review. She wanted the COX total package so I decided to give it another try. Holy Cow. Its even WORSE this time! Here, the internet goes out every 2-3 minutes, and the modem re-cycles. Ive had techs over here 3 separate times and none of them have any idea what to do. They have replaced the modem 3 times. Still nothing. So I call customer support to get a credit on the internet since its literally unusable. I get some ghetto talking woman with a ghetto attitude. She tells me that they cannot credit my account until the problem is solved.. well, I said they cant resolve it so I want my money back since I can only use the internet 2 minutes at a time. And she actually says to me.. not kidding.. "If thats not good enough for you then maybe you need to look elsewhere".
Goodbye Cox. Hope you go bankrupt soon
I would absolutley NOT recommend Cox High Speed Internet!

Just recently signed up for the Cox Bundle (Internet, Phone, Digital Cable) since we moved to Roland. Have been so far VERY impressed with the quality of service here in the Roland, OK area.
Phone quality is excellent, TV picture quality is great with no pixelation encountered so far at any time of the day. Currently subscribed to Premier Internet tier and am getting very consistent up and download speeds at most times of the day.
Was initially going to have to wait a week for install, but we are taking care of an elderly person and needed the phone line active as soon as possible for the Life Alert service to be reactivated. I asked Cox Support to expedite the install and they were able to have install completed on the next day after ordering.
Highly recommended service!

I got tired of paying over $50 for Earthlink DSL. So, I switched over to Cox HSI for the great lower price of $39.99, and 'Net speeds of twice as fast than Earthlink DSL. It took 3 days for install because I was waiting for Cox to call me up after signing up for HSI at BestBuy and buying a Linksys Cable Modem for $99 (free after rebates). But, I called Cox, and the friendly customer service had me surfing within 5 minutes! And that's it! I now recommend Cox HSI for your broadband.
It has been awhile since I've done an update for Cox HSI (San Diego), mainly because I've been in Japan for the last 8 months (I'm in the Navy). During the summer, I have read that Cox upgraded their speeds to 4 Mbps. After doing a speed test, I was amazed to see that almost a year ago, my Cox HSI was twice a slow as it is NOW. My love for Cox HSI gets better and better. I still highly recommend Cox HSI for broadband.
So far so good for Cox HSI. Their 4 Mbps up, and 512 kbps is outstanding.
Cox HSI has been very flaky...occasionally I would have to reset the modem, but most of the time I had to directly connect the modem to the cable coming out of the wall. That always "slapped" the modem to sync with Cox. But, it has been about a month since I had to do that. So far so good.
So far so good, as of October 29, 2005. I love how they just bump up the up/down speeds last year. Only a matter of time when they get it up to 5 megabits.
So far so good, as of May 18, 2006. No big issues with them. But, their Usenet/newsgroup access could be improved. Only a max of 50 KB/sec @ 4 connections is allowed. And sometimes binaries are incomplete or missing (sometimes the PAR files will be of no use).
My family and I moved to Japan as of TWO months ago. So, we don't have Cox. We have Americable Japan (Yokosuka). I cannot change my ISP here on BBR, so I'll just say that Americable Japan is fairly good, but not as good as Cox. We are getting 6 Mbits through Americable, but not always the (near) full speeds we should be seeing, sporadic speeds at different times. When my wife and I are on it simultaneously, we will see a speed-drop, especially when my wife is using torrents the speeds will drop way below the 1 Mbit.
Still in Japan. Americable Japan still sporadic, but most of the time it is steady at 4 Mbits.
I got transferred back to San Diego from Japan in August 2009. I ordered Cox HSI and Cox HD Cable service, but no phone because I already use Vonage as my primary phone. I opted for the self-install of Cox HSI so that I can buy my own cable modem. I purchased a Linksys CM100 cable modem from Best Buy. Four days later, and after receiving the self-install kit from UPS, I connected my Linksys cable modem to the wall and could NOT connect to the internet, nor view cable TV. Called Cox customer support and told me that they already sent a technician to activate my apartment's cable input. I still couldn't get it to work. So I had to wait another 2 days for another technician to check my cable. When the 2nd tech got there, he informed me that the 1st tech did put his name on the outside cable box as a completed install, but forgot to actually connect my service! Once done with cable TV, I was able to access Cox HSI self-install web site, but couldn't finish my registration. After exhausting my resources, I called Cox customer support. When I described my problem to customer support, he said that it could be the cable modem. I told him it was brand-new and properly connected to my laptop (via ethernet). He asked me what brand and model of cable modem I bought, and when I did tell him he told me that the Linksys CM100 is not listed in their database and not "officially" supported. Luckily, he told me to give him the serial number and MAC address of the cable modem and I was able to connect to the internet immediately.

My Cox service has been good up to this point. They usually respond to issues and do everything they can to resolve them. Recently, around 6pm my speeds have been well below the promised 10Mb. They are usually running between 2 and 4. I put in a complaint and the response was really not that desirable, "Unfortunately local engineers are not taking reports of single user utilization issues being that all utilization problems will be going away in the near future due to bigger plans." This did not make me happy, but I was assured that the upgrade was coming sooner then later. If this is not the case my review will change considerably and I will await the arrival of FIOS.
