persistent quality problems, going to Uverse

I'm in Dallas and have had Vonage ~2 months. During that time I've had a consistent problem with call quality, about every 20 seconds the call blanks out for a second or two. Worked with Vonage tech support on four separate extended calls. They couldn't fix the problem, and wanted me to move their router out in front of my network, which I wasn't willing to do. As a result, I'm porting over to ATT uverse.

Its a shame - good concept, good price, bad product quality for me.

There are a lot of other VOIP choices besides Vonage, likely you have more workable options than you think. The cost of the bundled phone with the TV is likely going to be higher, but good luck.

What kind of router do you have the Vonage device connected behind? The periodic loss of quality at regular intervals sounds like a SPI firewall that cannot keep up with the traffic flow. The other question is why didn't you at least try putting the Vonage device first? It would be interesting to find out if the problem goes away.

I agree with trekologer on both points he raised.

If you read the main VoipTechChat forum, you would see that router issues are quite common.

And I'd like to express my hope that AT&T does not go on strike in the next 10-15 days, in which case your U-Verse installation (and your porting) may be rather a mess.

have them roll your firmware back to the previous version. I was having the same problem with drops outs and it solved the problem.

Here's an update. Got moved to Uverse. Trying to cancel Vonage. They are telling me that I owe ~$120 in disconnect fees and that I had a 24 month committment??? They never communicated a committment to me. And even if so, to expect me to pay fees for service that doesn't work? This is appalling. If I can't get the fee waived I will lodge a complaint with the BBB, not that it will make much difference.

Sorry to hear you got hit by Vonage's semi-stealth cancellation policy. It IS in the TOS:
quote:
6.5 Fees upon disconnection.
(a) Disconnection by you. If you attempt to disconnect service before the end of your current service term, you will be responsible for all the charges for your current term, including unbilled charges, plus any disconnection fee. In addition, if you disconnect service that is based on a commitment before the end of the commitment, you agree to pay us the applicable recovery fee.

It's possible that you can get some of that credited back when you return your ATA -- I'm not sure.

No, no return on hardware after the first 30 days.

So the fact that I've been working with their tech support since day 1 to resolve issues, which were never resolved, doesn't count in their book. 30 days have passed, so I'm out of luck.

Maybe others can learn from my mistake:

Vonage HAS A LONG-TERM COMMITTMENT THAT MAY NOT BE OBVIOUS UP FRONT

It does not matter to Vonage whether your service works or not, you will be held to every term in the TOS. They tell me there is no way to waive any fees regardless of satisfaction level.

Buyer beware for sure.

You used a faulty router.

You agreed to their TOS when you signed up.

It's YOUR fault. Good luck with un-Verse

Thanks for the post - you have succinctly summed up the Customer Service philosophy Vonage expressed to me.

On what basis do you say that?

We can speculate, but there is no certainty.

Also: Everybody and everything on this world has faults. Do you believe that Vonage has any faults at all, or are they as perfect as could ever be?

If Vonage is the absolute "greatest", if they have no faults and no room for improvement, if Vonage is always right, and if dissatisfied customers are always wrong, then why ever bother discussing anything?

No, I don't see why this thread should be closed. The Vonage CSRs are NOT noted for being very helpful, in general, and that is a valid topic for this forum.

The Vonage CSR's are probably in a bad mood because they invested in Vonage stock.

Once at $ 17.00 a share, now about $ 0.38 a share (38 cents).

What's that old expression about the shit hitting the fanboys?

With U verse
All you had to do is
Have AT&T assign a Public IP which they can do it in 5 sec if you give them MAC number of your Vonage Device (found underneith the Device)
Problem solved

i'm sure.
They screwed me over BIG time.

They're the worst excuse for a company there is, right alongside AS&S and eBay. But, at least in AS&S' case, I can see they were clearly incompetent jackasses; not malicious lying bastards. Even as much as i loathe the ebay bored of dictators, and their lying, scheming selves, well, yeah, they might be just as bad. Hard to say for sure. But, needless to say, Vonage has lost me, forever, and will get as much bad publicity from me as possible.
Hey, they deserve it, afterall.
