| [2K] intermittent (internal) connection problem
I’ve recently reverted to an older W2K box while doing maintenance on my usual XP computer and am having an intermittent connection problem that I can’t figure out. I’m pretty sure the problem is within this computer as there are no problems with our other computers operating through the same DSL connection (Verizon via Covad) and router (D-link DIR-628). (This computer is wired into the router, not wireless, using the same cable and port as the XP computer had been successfully connected with.) Symptoms are that connecting to webpages and to email are sometimes fine and but often don’t work at all. I frequently get the “Address not found” response in Firefox and/or no connection to mail accounts via Eudora. Then, if I try again, it may or may not work on the next attempt. In the Firefox error page, it lets me ping the webpage. Most of the time, there is no packet loss, but sometimes there is complete loss. And often, after I’ve done the Ping check, the connection to the webpage will go through (in a new window). Also, the “Address not found” message will sometimes say the "internet connection appears to be working" and sometimes will say it appears to NOT be working.
–> Note that this may happen even though I am definitely online as (A) I am listening uninterrupted to online radio (via Winamp) on the same computer, and (B) the other computers are not having any problem.
I tried turning off the firewall (ZoneAlarm free) as well as the Antivirus (AVG) but that had no affect. Firefox, Eudora and IE are allowed in ZoneAlarm. (IE has similar connection problems as well.)
I think my network settings are OK. The IP address is within ZA’s trusted zone and is a number near to the other computers in the network (192.168.0.xx). And I can connect to the other computers in the LAN with no problem.

Milford, NH | First thing I'd try to to plug in a new NIC. You symptom has all the hallmarks of a bad connector.

It's an onboard NIC. If I buy a NIC card, does it override the onboard?

I would try going into device manger and disabling the onboard nic there. That should allow windows to to use the PCI NIC as the default connection.

| said by Viet Vet  : I would try going into device manger and disabling the onboard nic there. Since it is onboard their may also be a BIOS option to disable it. Even if you can't, Windows supports multiple NICs and nothing will be plugged into the onboard NIC.

That does not test the NIC, that is a local loopback, it never touches and network cards; just looped back in the stack via software.
