DNS on computer different from routers DNS

I hope this is the correct from to post this question:

I noticed something "strange " in my computers’ and router’s DNS addresses:

a) When I last setup port forwarding for my old computer C1 , the DNS I obtained when I typed ipconfig/all was 68.87.69.146 and 68.87.86.98 ( DHCP turned off , static IP for port forwarding) . These were what I used for the DNS entries when I set up static IP

b) However these DNS numbers do not agree with the current DNS numbers on my router which are : 68.87.68.150 and 68.87.85.102

I don’t have problems with these conflicting DNS numbers as I can surf the web , download files etc with my old computer C1 and port forwarding works also.

c)I then checked the DNS for my other 2 computers ( DHCP enabled ) and those have the same DNS numbers as the router's as expected .

From my records when I set up port forwarding on C1 , all the 3 computers had the same DNS as my old computer C1 ie 68.87.69.146 and 68.87.86.98 and maybe even the router's DNS was the same ( I should have recorded it)

Any idea why this is happening? And how is it that even with differing DNS between my old computer and my router , everything seems to be working OK on my old computer?

Tks

Slow streaming and request timeout on tracert

My browsing speed has been relatively smooth, occasionally the site/s will take a while to load, then subsequently everything will load at once.

Streaming videos, however, has been quite slow. Sometimes I'll have to wait like 1-2 minutes for the clip/video to start going, while my general browsing is still fluent ( i assume this because streaming uses the UDP protocol?).

Also whenever i do a tracert, besides the first hop and the last hop, the rest are all "request timeout". I have allowed ICMP on the firewall, and at one point i remember being able to tracert to google.ca now i just request timeout.

edit: Actually, the situation is a little different. My browsing is only slow if I'm going to a new website, but if I'm browsing within 1 website then it browses smoothly for some reason. Also, download speeds are just about to the max.

Thanks,
paper

[Windows] Home Network

I've currently got a 4 port router, but now I need 5 ports. Here's my goal. We have 3 computers wired to the router, and we have a laptop that we connect via wireless. We just had a PV system installed that now requires 2 router ports. My computer has to be turned on in order for the other 2 computers to access the My Book storage device and/or my Dell 3110 cn laser printer. I would like my network to allow access to the My Book and printer without having my computer turned on. What would be the best way to go? Buy a bigger router with more ports (do they make them) or add some switches or something to "extend" the current router? Any help would be appreciated.

A stable router - is a flashed Linksys WRT54GL the answer??

Here is my scenario. I currently have the Netgear WNDR3700 and it just locks up 2-3 times a day for me. I posted those details in the Netgear area of this forum, on the Netgear forum, and am in communication with Netgear support.

I used to use a Netgear WPNT834 which was an average router. Speeds werent great and I did get less lockups, but it still would at times.

Someone suggested to me that a cheap very stable alternative is WRT54GL with Tomato or DD-WRT firmware.

Here is what my network load can be like. I host a webserver with 1200 users, 100 at a time can happen , but not the norm. A lightly used Slingbox, 3 hard wired PCs, and 1 wireless laptop.

I just need stability at a good speed. I dont stream or bitorrent a this time. I just want mys server to be available and stop getting router lockups. Is the Linksys open source solution for real? I have read where many swear by it while others say its an acceptable low cost router solution.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why is gigabit slower?

Here is the setup. I have computer 1 with gigabit ethernet and a 1TB WD Black (32MB buffer, SATAII). Computer 2 has a 133MB/s IDE hard drive and gigabit ethernet.

Both computers are plugged into a D-link gigabit switch. I get 50mbps (yes, 50 megabits per second). If I plug both computers into my 10/100 router, I get the 100mbps minus the usual overhead. This switch has always done this on any gigabit capable computer, but why!? It should sustain at least 100mbps when using the gigabit switch if it goes that speed when connected to the 10/100 router.

Both computers also have WD Raptors, but I haven't tried benchmarking them yet.

The files I am testing are less than 1GB (around 150 to 600MB) when the speed is 50mbps on gigabit and 100mbps on the 10/100 router. When I test a 2GB file, I get a sustained 430mbps going from the IDE drive on the one computer to the 1TB drive on the other computer. I get a sustained 560 mbps going from the 1TB drive on the one computer to the Raptor on the other computer. It still shouldn't matter the size of the file or the hard drive, because it gets close to 100mbps when I use the router, but it only does 50 mbps on the switch.

I don't think it could be fragmentation either, because I should still get a sustained 100mbps+ with the switch if it did it with the router.

I should also note it doesn't "stay" at 50mbps with the switch. It fluctuates but the average is around 50mbps. It still goes above 100mbps sometimes, but rarely. Usually stays around 50mbps. With the router, it stays at the same speed.

[help] OOL Boost Cisco Router Setup help!

We've never had to do this before, but we're moving to a web based retrieval system for authorized clients to log in to our DB via the web.. SO, I've just got the boost static Ip service installed, and they've given me 5 Static Ip's to work with.

So you know where I'm at- I have 5 workstations that handle office workflow in office, and 1DB/Web Server.

Right now I've connected each PC- all the workstations and the DB/Web server tower into a switch. the switch is connected to the Cisco Router and I've configured each PC for static IP, using all 5 static IP addresses (I did this as fast as possible because we needed to be up and running today) All machines have successfully connected to the internet and they can all see each other and we can operate, but I know this isn't the way to do it.

What would be the best configuration? The way I understand it is only my Web Server would need a static IP, not each workstation in office..right? could I use another router of my own (like a d-link or linksys) behind the cisco router for the workstations in my office, but also allow them access to the Web Server / DB Server?...the optimum tech didn't help at all, and since it's my business I'm pretty much used to figuring it out on my own here:) I'd appreciate any help! thanks!@! :D

Configuring DNS with DHCP in a home network

Hi,

I have a home network with 2 laptops connected to a router, both running Vista, and one laptop has a Ubuntu VM running within. The router uses DHCP to assign IPs. Right now, apart from being able to connect to another machine's public shared folder using its hostname form time to time, I have not been able to use hostnames for anything else - SSH, other network apps etc.

Seems like I have to set up some kind of DNS server? Is there a way to do this while still using DHCP? Or will I HAVE to assign static IPs to everybody?

Thanks!
