'Usability problems' as Cohen predicted...
(old news - 09:51AM Thursday Mar 01 2007)
tags: Video · content
A recent comparison between an iTunes-purchased TV episode and a pirated copy showed that legit download services have a long way to go if companies want to keep users from gobbling up pirated wares. Early impressions of the official BitTorrent store are in, and this system also suffers from a rash of problems. Unsurprisingly, a lot of the issues are DRM-related, and they were predicted by BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen before the official store launched. Cohen in December:
"We're rolling out with some content DRM'd, using Windows DRM, at the insistence of our content partners. We're very concerned about the usability problems DRM introduces, and are educating our content partners about the lost commercial opportunity."
That education attempt apparently didn't go so well.

Update: Something not mentioned in the various impression reports we've seen is that the site now offers "free" games that are really just crippled demo versions provided by TryMedia (they're a division of our friends at Macrovision), some of which are infected with adware (screenshot).

We're not much for predictions, but we're going to go out on a limb here and guess that offering DRM-crippled video and adware soaked games isn't going to be a huge profit maker for Mr. Cohen and company. Users are going to take one look at this mess and head right back to less ethically concerned (and free) alternatives.

Agreed. If you can't roll out a DRM'd product as good a quality as un-DRM'd pirate content, it'll fail every time.

and to think with TVshows its not even Piracy.

whats sad is the whole marketing engine of the MPAA and RIAA tries to say piracy makes worse copies and yet atm the legit source has the low quality then the grey market source(i dont consider torrents of TV Shows piracy as well its not much different then giving the VHS tape of the show to a friend)

Hopefully with more schemes such as this, Hollywood and
Organized Music are equally doomed. Makes you almost want
to see them perpetuate DRM as a business model knowing
that everything they try is going to fail miserably. The
sooner such plans drive them into bankruptcy, the better.

It isn't failure, it is a feature

Since DRM is, cough, cough, all for the benefit of the user it is working fantastic by preventing unauthorized viewing. Clearing showing who owns the content.

DRM works so well. In fact it prevents authorized viewing. This sure is great quality and highly valuable to customers. NOT !!

DRM has two rules.

1st) read Dadkins post

2nd) re-read Dadkins post.

AGREED!

if it's so DRM'd that VLC can't play it, then what's the point?

there are better (read non-DRM) free and faster sources for stuff out there.

About the same time Taylor troll, stops chanting their (MPAA/RIAA) mantra.

What can one say about the possibility of this happening.?

A new game, being offered free?

Is that a link to a pirated copy being pushed via 'legit' store front?

Re: Free stuff

In fact looking through it looks like all the games are free...and this includes a lot of new titles....

Edit: Ok, looks like they've partnered with Try Media and most of these games are adware crammed trial versions that I think lock down after a bit, and unlock if you activate them online via credit card (but probably still spew ads).

Pretty clever I guess, though misleading in a way. "Look, we can offer free stuff too! Just like Torrentspy.com!"

That is not really Bittorent's fault its Trymendia's who package the games for Bittorent and many other consumer sites and their content partners are the ones that put Adware in the games .

Cool a game for free.!! I'll get right on that..NOT!!!

Those who had the distinct pleasure of getting root kitted through the purchase of legit Sony BMI Cd's. One can just imagine, the trojan-ed, root kitted, virus, ad infested mess offered in a free game. Just my opinion though. Thanks, but no thanks

I have no worries here, I tried one download... it was crap!

Acronis can make it go away if I was to have ran it, but avast didn't like it so it's toast!

Not that it would have been allowed to run anyways... something would have caught it. LOL!

Try Media has a new feature 'in game advertising'

Wow I just can't believe I was able to play games without it until now!

Karl the thing is I have invested a lot of time downloading this POS. I could have downloaded a pirated (read working) copy of the game for free.

It's still easier for users to either pirate a game, or order it from Amazon....until they either make DRM transparent (or eliminate it entirely), I just don't see these services doing anything of worth....

Re: Free stuff

yea Bethesda to a gamble and it payed off
sure it was downloaded ALOT but in the end its one of the best selling PC games EVER

and i will be buying the new expansion pack coming out
friend got me the add-on pack that has all the for download content on one DVD and i got free horse armor when i got mine lol

i hope you have a good PC though its a very demanding game at higher settings but worth it

also i think i payed like 60 for the special edition and i have put in almost 300 hours of game play since it came out
and i still havent "saved the world"

so yea if more game devs would do stuff like that im more likely to go buy it

the other side of the coin when i say vids of X3 (space sim PC game not the x-men movie) i realy wanted to get it
then i heard it had starforce guess what i wont buy it now
though now its on steam and i may get it thay way since that ver does NOT have starforce in it

Steam is your friend if you want some good games with out all the copy protection crap

Wow BT should at least tell people it's a demo/trial game.
Also I read the EULA and there was nothing about Try Media, Active Mark or any advertising (it was Eidos and MS DirectX EULA *only*).

I had to download DirectX SDK for the game to start. Only to get that screen.

Yeah I thought it was something like that. A 2 gig download, with no reference that it's a demo.....that's a bit annoying.....

Re: Free stuff

No it's 5.17 GB download. Plus 500 MB for DirectX SDK.
Also I removed Bittorent using Control Panel and the uninstall finished OK.

But Bittorrent was never removed, the folder in Program Files was intact and I had to manually remove it.

LOL, such irony is a beautiful thing.

Warezed games offers a clean bill of health, removes the Cd check. Legally purchased games should come stock this way, because it offers value by protecting the Cd at the same time.

In addition to being fully functional, no activation required, hassle free version, just install then frag the chit out of anything that moves. :P

Edit spelling error correction meant value, not valve.

or if your a medic, heal the chit out of anything that bleeds. =)

I think its also interesting how "updates" and patches are getting their own pirate channels too. As in a certain game, where you've got to DL a critical patch or update, the updates given to you clean or just embedded already. Love these tubes.

Renting is a good idea

Renting rules:

You may watch this on one computer. You have 30 days from the transaction to download the file and 24 hours to watch it after you first click play.
Whats the difference between this and pay-per-view other than your watching it on your computer? I don't think its the DRM that's the problem... its the content that most aren't willing to pay for. Why most aren't willing to pay for the content... who knows... for me, most of the content is just not worth my time, or hard earned money. This isn't so bad however, that I wouldn't purchase content that I was really into, or wanted to see. I think renting is the way to go anyway... most movies I buy sit unwatched... whats the point, lol

people wont pay for stuff like network TV shows as willingly because they should be free in the minds of most. its free when you flip your TV to ABC or the other networks.
